The Speaker of the National Assembly of Seychelles, Dr Patrick Herminie, has sent a letter of condolence to the secretariat of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and to the wife of Dr William Shija following his untimely death in London, last week.

Dr Shija, a Tanzanian national, served as the secretary general of the CPA from January 1, 2007 to October 4, 2014 and was the first black African secretary general in the association’s history.

A holder of a Master’s Degree and a PhD in Mass Communication from Howard University, USA, Dr Shija has held several key posts in his distinguished career serving as a member of the National Assembly of Tanzania and a minister in several ministries.

Referring to Dr Shija as a personal friend and a close friend of Seychelles, the Speaker added that his demise will be a great loss for Africa and the Commonwealth.

Dr Shija officially visited Seychelles in 2010 and was very active in strengthening capacity building and democracy in Seychelles.
